New Adventures and New Beginnings

Have you ever had one of those "Aha!" moments where life starts to make complete sense and you feel the most clarity of your path in life? Have you also experienced that moment of euphoria and let it get ripped away by your self-doubt and anxiety? Said "Yes" to both? Then we have a big thing in common! :)

About two months ago, me and my boyfriend were sitting on the couch sketching, talking, you know, the typical Saturday morning.  He's one of those people that is so super humanly intelligent and talented, but, like me, experiences a lot of self-doubt and humbleness to the point of insanity! For our first Christmas together, he painted me these four little canvas prints of my favorite thing: Mid Century televisions.

They are something that to him seemed insignificant, but to me were the best presents I could've received.  This was in 2012 and since then, I've begged him to make more.  Now flash forward to two month ago, we had the idea, "Why not start our own business"? It's by NO MEANS a novel business venture, but one we loved the idea of.  I had just left my job of almost 10 years and I've been CRAVING something to feed my need for organized chaos.
We decided to take the plunge and start "Bone Jack Designs".  "Bone Jack" is a slang term used decades ago, to describes stealing a dead man's style.  Something we all do today by referring back to our favorite eras and paying homage to their sense of style.
Now you would think we would start simple and do canvas prints first.  Nope.  We decided to screen print tees by hand using my boyfriend's sketches.  We learned emulsion techniques, proper screen printing methods and how not to get print all over your bathroom floor.  Needless to say, it was trial and error, but we knew that if we could master this, we could handle ANYTHING.  We are not pro's at screen printing and we have no desire to be.  We are just amazing we did it by ourselves!

We are extremely nervous, excited and ANXIOUS about where we can take this, but we are under no illusions.  The only thing we can do is have fun and stop being so hard on ourselves :)

Wear Whatever the Hell You Want

I don't know about you, but I feel like everyday should be a day to dress-up, wear weird things, or just be a different style version of yourself. My style is not fluid by any means.  I wear what I want and there's usually never any rhyme or reason.  I go through spurts where I will wear nothing but Black for weeks on end, or I'll wear the most ostentatious vintage blouse or dress. Weird looks and stares are usually waiting outside the door, but as Mae West said, "It's better to be looked over than over-looked". Or at least, that's my motto. Lately, I've decided that if I want to wear a 1950's bathing suit out and about, I'm going to. I don't live near any lakes or pools, but it's nice to pretend like you do :) 1950's Bathing Suit w/ a 1960's Bed Jacket I'm quite a big fan of Vintage Bed Jackets and it's one of the many things I hoard (collect).  I found this GORGEOUS & PRISTINE Deadstock Bed Jacket from "

What's Behind the Elusiveness of "Plus Size Vintage"?

My main goal when opening my business,  Carmine & Hayworth , was to open the arena of vintage fashion to EVERYONE! Especially those who didn't think vintage was made for their body type (that used to be me). When I started collecting vintage clothing I would collect dresses/ pieces that I WISHED I could fit into because I didn't think vintage pieces existed for someone like me who doesn't have a tiny waist or hips. It wasn't until I really started doing my research that I found a whole new world, of what I like to call, "Size Inclusive Vintage". Living in North Dakota, the world of vintage, especially vintage fashion, could be scarce. I had to SCOUR Etsy, Ebay and wherever I could outside of the state to find these elusive pieces. Once I taught myself how to track these pieces down, I was not only HOOKED, but I felt that I had a whole new appreciation for these clothes. 1950's Knit, Moss Green, Wiggle Dress by "Snyderknit of California Sports

The One Phrase That Makes Me Cringe & How We Can Change It...

"I love vintage clothing, but I don't know when I'd wear it" Whenever someone makes that comment to me, my heart breaks a little.  The answer is that you can ALWAYS find a time & place to wear vintage!  The key is to have CONFIDENCE when you wear something outside of your comfort zone! Even if you're not confident, FAKE IT! Pretend you're playing a role until that confidence becomes the truth! I grew up wearing things, not necessarily vintage, that always caused people to talk, sneer or poke fun at me.  That's was people do when they don't understand you or, let's face it, life in general. Well guess what? That's NOT your problem! If they don't like it, great! They don't have to wear it! That leaves more amazing clothing for you!
